The course will be divided into two parts, AWS and WIGOS. The AWS part aims to enhance the trainees’ practice skill in the installation and maintenance of automatic weather station (AWS), including the devices for both surface and upper-air observation. Trainees are expected to improve the capabilities of maintaining instrument and system performance, and diagnosing faults of the instruments and systems as well as calibration in automatic weather station. The WIGOS introduces most of the global observation systems in use, and the current data exchange policy.

By studying the online courseware, participants will be able to: 

  • 1)know more about the WMO Integrated Global Observing System (WIGOS) and China’s Integrated Meteorological Observing System;
  • 2) get better understanding in the structure, operation and maintenance of automatic weather station (AWS).

Target Audience

Officials, specialists and experts from developing countries, who are working in the field related to meteorological observing systems and especially interested in the operation and maintenance of automatic weather station.

Application and Participation

  • 1) Please visit the CMA-MOOC website http://mooc.cmatc.cma.cn/?lang=en and create your own account.
  • 2) The two parts are separated. Please select the part you want to enroll, or enroll both if your time is available. For register and get access to those parts, use CMATC2021-a for the AWS part, and CMATC2021-b for the WIGOS part. 
  • 3) The applicants should register for the course no later than 30 July 2021.
  • 4) The participants are required to finish all the courseware study and questionnaire. The digital certificate will be issued separately for each part. Each participant who has completed each part will be issued a digital certificate of the participation by CMATC/WMO RTC Beijing.

The course is aimed to help participants to improve their forecasting skills, such as the forecasting of hazardous weather phenomena and weather parameters, and to enhance their capabilities in providing aeronautical meteorological services, especially the issuance of significant meteorological information (SIGMET). With an aim to support least developed and developing countries and other countries especially in Asia to implement WMO Aeronautical Meteorology Programme (AeMP), the course will also introduce typical cases of aeronautical meteorological services in China.

The course is aimed to help freshmen in satellite meteorology to understand the concept of satellite remote-sensing, to enhance their basic knowledge in the interpretation of meteorological satellite data, and to improve their skills in simple weather analysis and environmental monitoring. Trainees will be expected to improve their capabilities of data acquisition and assimilation, their ability to utilize the satellite monitoring system, as well as their proficiency in satellite remote-sensing application.
